LITCHFIELD – Kimberly Jo (Hutchins) Mironovas, 47, of Litchfield, ME passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2018. She was formerly of Andover, ME. Born in Rumford, ME on June 11, 1970 she was a daughter of Arthur and Jeannette (Simmons) Hutchins. Kimberly graduated from Telstar High School and then went on to graduate from Becker College in Worcester, MA in 1990 with a degree in Interior Design. Design was her passion for many years and just last year she pursued a career change at the Aveda Institute in Augusta, ME. Kimberly loved art, painting, and was a self taught piano player. She was a loving daughter, sister and mother.
Kimberly is survived by her son Lukas Mironovas of Litchfield, her parents Arthur and Jeannette Hutchins of Andover; a brother, Eric Hutchins and his companion Cathy Stanley of Andover; two sisters, Jennifer Young and her husband Joe of Andover and Beth Hutchins of Gilead; nephews, Jacob McGurn, Taran Vitale, and Chandler Dresser; niece and Goddaughter Brianna Vitale.
Victim Impact Statement:
I’m writing on behalf of my nephew Lukas Mironovas. Although it is difficult to express exactly how I feel about the death of my sister Kimberly Mironovas, one thing is clear, we love both Kimberly and Lukas with all our heart. We find ourselves in a position where we have empathy for the victim and empathy for the offender in this case. And although I believe that Lukas needs to be held accountable for his actions in the homicide of my sister, I also believe there are mitigating circumstances.
Lukas experienced mental health issues from a very young age. His mental health conditions isolated him at school and at home and my sister and Lukas’ father were also isolated in their quest to help Lukas. They both did all they could do to help Lukas and our family wanted to help him too. I wanted him to know that no matter what, I loved him and would be there for him. Lukas wanted to move to Maine to be closer to us, and Kimberly made that happen. Lukas had a fresh start and things were going well…until the day Lukas started experiencing problems at his new school with some of his peers.
And as a result of these problems, Lukas was kicked out of school, and isolated once again. Kimberly arranged for two of Lukas’ friends from Massachusetts to come visit him to alleviate the isolation he was experiencing. Up until the day she died, Kimberly took actions on behalf of her son to help him. I strongly believe if not for the overt actions of his friends from Massachusetts, Lukas may have made different decisions. I wonder if Lukas had been admitted into a psychiatric facility the day he was suspended from school if that could have saved my sister’s life.
Part of the grieving process has me looking at missed opportunities and how this could have been prevented so no other family has to endure the kind of pain we are experiencing. There are no excuses for taking another person’s life but mental health and mental illness issues negatively impact some individuals to no fault of their own and lead them to make poor choices. Lukas is one of those individuals and the reason I have empathy for him in this situation. I knew he had been struggling for years with mental health issues and our family wanted him to know that despite his condition, he was loved and accepted no matter what. But our love wasn’t enough.
Lukas was in need of professional medical attention and the steps my sister had taken revealed she did everything she could as a mother to help her son get well. Where do we as a society step in and intervene on behalf of the child and their family to prevent a downward spiral? Please consider this set of circumstances when you assess a sentence for my nephew Lukas Mironovas. Please consider that had it not been for a mental health system slow to react and an outside negative influence from peers, Lukas may have never considered harming his mother or anyone for that matter. I grieve the loss of my sister and her only son.
