The Healthy Cooking Bootcamp for Veterans at the Culinary Institute of America

Thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project, we got the opportunity to attend the Healthy Cooking Bootcamp at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. It was an amazing experience and I am proud of myself for working through my fears and attending this program.

I had never really been a cook. It was something that I didn’t have time for when I was serving in the military. I tried to teach myself but found the experience completely overwhelming. I also had a hard time juggling multiple tasks in the cooking process without my anxiety kicking into overdrive. As a result, my husband did most of the cooking because of my fears and experiences in the kitchen. But the training at the Culinary Institute of America changed all that for me. Now I can make dinner for my husband and have since invited friends and family over for dinner too. My goal was to cook for others as a way to show my love. Mission accomplished.

Just a couple of veterans learning how to cook healthy. Food is energy. Food is love.
Day 1 the Chef taught us how best to cut fruits and vegetables.
My group made this beautiful salad on Day 1.
My group prepared this meal on Day 2.
Another group preparing their meal for the day.
Some of the meals prepared by the groups on Day 3. My group prepared the dish on the right.
Chef teaching us some new skills. The recipe is a guide. Make everything from scratch.
My very first attempt at making pasta.
The meal my group prepared with my homemade pasta on Day 4.
