Murder in the Dorm at University of Alaska Fairbanks (1993)
This cold case investigation hits home with me. This tragedy happened while I was attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993. It occurred in Bartlett Hall where I lived my sophomore year. I was living off campus at the time of the incident. It caused panic on the campus back then because a suspect was never found. And to this day a suspect still has never been charged by law enforcement. Sophie Sergie, an Alaska native was 20 years old when she was raped and murdered in Fairbanks.
Fairbanks – A caribou antler rack affixed to the wall next to a tall bookshelf attests to the office owner’s current assignment, enforcing state fish and game regulations. In the past, however, Alaska State Trooper Lieutenant Lantz Dahlke stalked more dangerous game.
The lieutenant is a former homicide detective and, later, cold case investigator. The discovery April 26, 1993, of a young woman’s body, murdered in a dorm bathroom at University of Alaska Fairbanks, haunted him in both capacities.
More than a decade later the Sophie Sergie case remains hard to forget.
