Murder in the Dorm at University of Alaska Fairbanks (1993)

*This cold case investigation hits home with me. This tragedy happened while I was attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993. It occurred in Bartlett Hall where I lived the semester before. I was residing next door in Skarland Hall at the time of the incident. It caused panic on the campus back then because a suspect was never found. And to this day a suspect still has never been charged by law enforcement. Sophie Sergie, an Alaska native was 20 years old when she was raped and murdered in Fairbanks.

Fairbanks – A caribou antler rack affixed to the wall next to a tall bookshelf attests to the office owner’s current assignment, enforcing state fish and game regulations. In the past, however, Alaska¬†State Trooper Lieutenant Lantz Dahlke stalked more dangerous game.

The lieutenant is a former homicide detective and, later, cold case investigator. The discovery April 26, 1993, of a young woman’s body, murdered in a dorm bathroom at University of Alaska Fairbanks, haunted him in both capacities.

More than a decade later the Sophie Sergie case remains hard to forget.
